With this approach, they confirmed the most popular pizza toppings in America.

Pepperoni

Pepperoni pizza scored a 64% approval rating in YouGov’s survey, landing in the top spot as America’s most popular pizza topping. The first pepperoni pizzas appeared in Connecticut in the 1950s and soon became popular with pizza chain restaurants everywhere. 

Sausage

Sausage is another popular pizza topping. It placed second in YouGov’s survey of popular pizza toppings, with 56% of those surveyed giving sausage the thumbs-up. 

Mushrooms

Mushrooms rank third on America’s most popular pizza topping list. Mushrooms are common in spaghetti sauce and complement the flavor of many other popular pizza toppings, including sausage, tomatoes, and peppers. 

Cheese

Reader’s Digest used data from 2022 Grubhub orders to compile a list of the most popular foods in America, and cheese pizza placed fourth. Cheese is also an extra topping for those who want their pizza extra cheesy, and this topping placed fourth on YouGov’s survey, with a 52% approval rating. 

Onions

The topping in the number five spot on YouGov’s survey is the only topping that scored less than 50%. Onions are popular with 48% of respondents, and they’re one of the key ingredients in a popular Milwaukee combo, along with cheese, mushrooms, and sausage. 

Bacon

Bacon is another popular pizza topping. In fact, people love to put two types of bacon on pizza; regular bacon and Canadian bacon. Both options taste great on their own, and they also complement other toppings such as olives, pineapple, and tomatoes.

Black olives

Although the most popular pizza toppings are usually meats, cheeses, or vegetables, a few fruits make the list. Olives are a popular fruit and key ingredient in Greek salad, so it’s no surprise they’re one of the featured toppings on Greek pizza. 

Green peppers

Green peppers are loaded with antioxidants and vitamin C. The health benefits may not be foremost in your mind when you add them to your pizza, though. Pineapple

Spinach

YouGov surveyed people to determine the most popular vegetables in America, and popular options like potatoes, sweetcorn, carrots, and tomatoes make the top 10. Spinach comes in at 19, just making the top 20. When it comes to pizza toppings, however, spinach is one of the most popular options. Its flavor and texture make it a popular option for pizza lovers, and it’s a key ingredient in veggie and Greek pizzas.
